âIn Syncâ features the newest production of âLes Nocesâ by Pascal Rioult, the return of Pam Tanowitzâs âLike Fragments of an Old Songâ, as well as the premiere of âUbi Suntâ by department chair Karen Potter. A 2019 audience favorite âBrothersâ by Gary Galbraith will also return, along with the premiere of the companion piece âSistersâ.
âLes Nocesâ, by two time recipient of the Choo-San Goh Award for Choreography Pascal Rioult, is a sexually charged deconstruction of the marriage ritual, infusing the strong structural composition with provocative movement and unabashed energy.
Pam Tanowitzâs âLike Fragments of an Old Songâ is set to and inspired by âBroad and Freeâ, a composition for violin and piano by contemporary composer Caroline Shaw. The work was created during Tanowitzâs eight day CWRU residency in 2019 and explores fragmented movements woven together by the dancersâ connectivity and intuition, with an homage to the history of Mather Dance Center.
Created by chair of the department Karen Potter, âUbi Suntâ is a somber dance for 10 women that was loosely inspired by the sadness endured when losing a loved one.
âBrothersâ, premiered in 2019 by Galbraith, showcases 7 of the men of the dance department. Set to the music of Barbatuques, âBrothersâ brings forward a camaraderie among the men in a highly rhythmic and dynamic field of motion. Drawing from the strengths of the men, this dance has a tribal quality yet remains a contemporary, communal ensemble.
Also on the program is the premiere of âSistersâ, the companion piece to âBrothersâ, thus completing the Sibling series. Like âBrothersâ, âSistersâ features a cast of 7 women and shares the same kind of tribal and primitive feeling yet remains contemporary. Utilizing the driving score by Mikkael Karlsson, Sisters is a celebration of the communal power and strength of women.
**Increasing COVID-19 cases within Northeast Ohio have prompted Case Western Reserve to resume its requirement that masks be worn indoors. In addition, only those who are fully vaccinated (two weeks past their final dose) should attend any campus event. Leaders continue to monitor pandemic developments and may need to adjust health protocols further as circumstances warrant. In-person is subject to change based on COVID-19 guidelines.**
