Program

From Renaissance to Brandenburg

ÃÛÌÒAPP Historical Performance Practice (HPP) program presents an evening that traces the rich expressive arc of early music, from Renaissance polyphony to the brilliance of the High Baroque.

The program opens with the Baroque Orchestra, directed by Dr. Julie Andrijeski, performing the Overture from Suite in D Major for Trumpet and Strings, TWV 55:D7 by Georg Philipp Telemann, featuring Sebastian Cole, trumpet. The orchestra continues with the lyrical Andante from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Violin Concerto in A Minor, BWV 1041, performed by Bruno Lunkes, baroque violin, and concludes the evening with the exhilarating first movement of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, BWV 1050, featuring Ellen Sauer Tanyeri, flute; Liz Loayza, baroque violin; and Mikhail Grazhdanov, harpsichord.

Doctor of Musical Arts students present French and Italian Baroque vocal repertoire, including Pourquoi, doux Rossignol by Jean-Baptiste Drouart de Bousset, Suivez le doux Printemps (Anonymous, Ballard 1696), and O come sei gentile from Monteverdi’s Settimo Libro di Madrigali, performed by Naomi McMahon, Sophia Duray, and Danur Kvilhaug.

The Collegium Ensemble, directed by Dr. Elena Mullins Bailey, explores Renaissance masterworks with Claudin de Sermisy’s J’ayme le cueur and Heinrich Finck’s Ach herzigs Herz, performed by Sophia Duray, Naomi McMahon, Gabriel Lawrence, Danur Kvilhaug, Jonathan Milord, and Daniel Shoskes.

Faculty artists Elena Mullins Bailey, Julie Andrijeski, Jaap ter Linden, and Peter Bennett perform Philipp Heinrich Erlebach’s expressive Sonata Terza in A Major (Adagio – Allemande – Sarabande – Ciaconne – Final), highlighting the elegance and rhetorical depth of the German Baroque chamber tradition.

The evening also features the Baroque Dance Ensemble, directed by Julie Andrijeski, presenting Chaconne for a Harlequin by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, with choreography by Ferdinand Le Roussau (1728 French Baroque dance tradition). The performance brings together music and movement in a vivid example of Baroque theatrical collaboration, featuring Sophia Duray, dancer; Liz Loayza, violin; and Danur Kvilhaug, guitar.

Together, these performances showcase the collaborative spirit of CWRU’s Historical Performance Practice program, where voices, strings, winds, continuo, and dance come together in historically informed artistry.
