Since 2018, the availability of "gas station drugs"—or intoxicating consumer products (e.g., hemp-derived cannabinoids, kratom, 7-OH, and "shrooms")—has rapidly expanded across the United States. Efforts to regulate these substances have intensified but remain deeply contested, despite mounting concerns about their health impacts. In this presentation, we will discuss the social and regulatory contexts that provided fertile ground for the emergence of this new market, how commercial actors strategically leveraged these contexts to maximize profit, and the broader implications for public health and policy.
