Approaches to standardize SEEG: from a standardized terminology to simple quantitative approaches

Event Date:
January 28th 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

CMU Neural Engineering Virtual Seminars

Speaker: Dr. Birgit Frauscher, MD PD FAES FACNS, Distinguished Professor of Neurology and Director of the Duke Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, Duke University

Abstract: Stereo-EEG (SEEG) has transformed presurgical evaluation in drug-resistant focal epilepsy, yet substantial variability in terminology and interpretation continues to limit multicenter collaboration and broad clinical translation. This talk will outline current efforts to standardize SEEG, beginning with the development of a consensus terminology that enables consistent description of SEEG patterns across centers. Building on this foundation, this talk will highlight simple quantitative approaches that can enhance diagnostic yield, reduce subjectivity, and support reproducible clinical decision-making. Together, these initiatives aim to streamline SEEG interpretation, improve communication among clinicians and researchers, and ultimately advance precision epilepsy care.
