Now, that student perspective is echoed on a national scale: CWRU has been named one of 75 “Dream Schools” in journalist Jeff Selingo’s new book Dream School: Finding the College That’s Right for You.

Opportunities in Cleveland

Emma Lin

With nationally ranked hospitals, a thriving arts scene, and employers like NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland gives students access to careers and culture. “I’m intending to go to medical school, so three hospitals nearby is a very good opportunity for shadowing,” said second-year student Emma Lin, who volunteers at University Hospitals.

A city that’s livable and inspiring

From the Cleveland Museum of Art and Severance Music Center to affordable neighborhoods and professional sports teams, the city is both welcoming and vibrant.

First-year student Tanya Clemens captured that balance: “Case Western Reserve was my dream school because I really liked the diversity of subjects offered, and I was looking for somewhere that had a strong culture. I felt like CWRU was in the perfect location with all of the art around and the culture was very vibrant here. I also really liked the campus—all the greenery.” 

A place for dreams to grow

For many, CWRU allows them to combine passions. 

“The fact that I can study biomedical engineering here—but also do something more specialized like mechanical engineering and get hands-on experience makes CWRU my dream school and everything that I want it to be," said third-year student Dante Barchiese.

Research and innovation

CWRU is known for encouraging undergraduates to pursue research early in their college careers. Fourth-year Alexander Krammer, who’s studying biochemistry, said: “The freedom and support to pursue your own interests makes CWRU my dream school. For me, this includes the VA, research opportunities, and computer science and biochemistry classes."

Community and belonging

Students also talk about the close-knit community they find. “I really like the community here,” said second-year chemistry student Dubem Akunyili. “I feel like the community I’m a part of, people I’ve met through clubs and events—CWRU fosters that.” 

Together, these experiences reflect what Selingo identifies in Dream School: that the best colleges aren’t only those with the most selective admissions, but those that open doors for students to thrive.
