Jonathan L. Entin, the David L. Brennan Professor Emeritus of Law and adjunct professor of political science in the College of Arts and Sciences, wrote a piece about Supreme Court appointments during presidential election years.

The piece features an in-depth discussion of the case of John Hessin Clarke. Clarke was a graduate of Western Reserve College in 1877, and was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1916.
