Story by: Editorial Staff
I write to share the sad news that Clive R. Hamlin, PhD, associate professor emeritus in the Department of Pathology at ÃÛÌÒAPP School of Medicine, passed away on Jan. 1, 2026.
Clive was a valued member of our faculty for over 50 years. After earning his doctorate in biochemistry, he joined the Department of Pathology at CWRU and University Hospitals of Cleveland as an instructor in 1970, later advancing to associate professor of Pathology. From 2018–2026, he was an associate professor emeritus with an exceptionally active set of continuing faculty contributions. His major professional focus was clinical chemistry, and he was an important contributor to the education of Pathology residents in this area. Clive contributed substantially to the administrative leadership of University Pathologists, the prior practice plan for the Department of Pathology. Later, he applied his expertise in clinical chemistry and clinical laboratory management in the role of clinical laboratory director for the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center.
He was also a passionate participant in the leadership of the Pathology Graduate Program. For many years, he served as a member of all of the thesis committees for the PhD program to ensure best practices in the guidance of PhD students. Clive was instrumental in guiding many students through pivotal moments in their training and was a dedicated professor whose commitment to teaching inspired generations of students, leaving a lasting legacy within our academic community.
Please join me in extending sincere condolences to Clive’s family and friends during this time.
